Chinese lottery sales up to CNY373.29bn in 2021, but still below 2019

Chinese lottery sales came to CNY373.29bn (£43.71bn/€52.60bn/$58.67bn) in 2021, up 11.8% from Covid-hit 2020 when retails sales were suspended for a large part of the year.

The Sports Lottery made up the majority of this total, with CNY231.03bn, which was 22.0% more than the year before.

Sport Lottery instant game revenue was up by 78.2% to CNY26.22bn.

Video lottery games also made a small contribution to the total sales, with sales of CNY970,000.

The Welfare Lottery, meanwhile, brought in sales of CNY142.25bn, though this was down by 1.8% from the year before. Most of this total came from numbers games, which brought in CNY91.38bn, a 25.3% decline.

Sales of instant games, however, nearly doubled to CNY28.19bn.

While total sales were up year-on-year, they were still significantly below the CNY42.20bn recorded in 2019.

Looking just at December, sales came to CNY32.26bn, which was 12.3% less than in 2020.

Of this total, CNY18.01bn came from the Sports Lottery, while Welfare Lottery Sales totalled CNY14.23bn.

Betting was the most popular form of Sports Lottery game, while for the Welfare Lottery, numbers games led the way.
