DK regulator begins preparations for MitID roll-out

Denmark’s Gaming Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has urged licensed gambling operators to prepare for changes to the country’s national identification scheme, with a new system set to replace NemID next year. MitID is due to launch in May 2021 to replace NemID, the online verification solution used by almost all Danish citizens to log into online banking; communicate with public authorities; and prove their identity for digital services such as online gambling.

Its replacement, MitID, is an updated variant, which has been developed in partnership between the public and private sectors. NemID, which has been in use since 2010, will be gradually phased out throughout 2021. Use of the new system will be mandatory for all gaming businesses by the end of 2021.

Unlike the previous system, private digital service providers - such as licensed gambling operators - required to partner a third-party broker. This entity, which must be licensed by the country's Digitisation Agency, will be responsible for carrying out identity checks on players.

To support its licensees, Spillemyndigheden will host a meeting for all licensed operators that currently offer online casinos and betting in Denmark later this year to update them on the switch to MitID. The announcement comes after the regulator this week updated its technical and reporting requirements for online gambling licensees, requiring self-exclusion checks before push notifications and creating a new reporting category for virtuals. The section of the current technical requirements related to the national self-exclusion register ROFUS has been updated, with licensees required to check whether players have self-excluded before they send push notifications to mobile apps.
