DraftKings sets out expansion plans in Europe

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator DraftKings has revealed plans to expand its services into other European markets after acquiring a Controlled Skill Games Licence from the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA). The company has been active in the regulated UK market for almost a year now and has more than seven million registered players worldwide. DraftKings is now keen to build on this success by launching in Malta and other countries in Europe during the first quarter, with Germany cited as a potential expansion market. The move comes shortly after the MGA introduced a new regulatory regime for games of skill. “We are pleased that Malta has recognised the need for special licensing of daily fantasy sports and other skilled-based games,” DraftKings’ chief executive and co-founder Jason Robins said. “The MGA is an innovative organisation and it is clear that they have put a lot of thought and rigor into this process. Joseph Cuschieri, Executive Chairman of the MGA, added: “Malta’s intention to regulate digital skill games with a prize was first announced in December 2014 when the MGA published a consultation document. “From then onwards, the MGA sought the input of various industry stakeholders and experts in order to develop a framework which facilitates the development of the sector, while ensuring adequate protection for players and fairness of the games.” Related article: DraftKings confirms merger with FanDuel
