Alabama has moved a step closer to introducing a regulated fantasy sports market after legislation was approved by the state’s House of Representatives.

Alabama has moved a step closer to introducing a regulated fantasy sports market after legislation was approved by the state’s House of Representatives. According to local CBS affiliate WIAT, the bill passed by a vote of 43-38 and will now move to the Senate. Fantasy sports has been a subject of debate in the state for some time now after Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange in April of last year ruled it illegal and that all operators must end activities in the state.

However, should the bill be signed into law, it would regulate fantasy sports competitions in Alabama and allow the state to tax a portion of operator profits. Senate Minority Leader Quinton Ross said: “The world wide web is just open to everyone; I mean, you can be in Las Vegas and sitting right here in Montgomery, Alabama. “I think it’s necessary to provide this extra layer of protection to those individuals who play fantasy football.” Related article: Alabama classes daily fantasy sports games as illegal
