Chilean casinos bounce back in first full month of activity since February 2020

Chile’s casino regulator, the Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ) has reported CLP$13.24bn (£11.8m/€13.8m/$16.0m) in tax contributions from the sector in August.

The income came as casinos generated a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of CLP$40.8bn in August.

The regulator noted that industry revenue increased rapidly this month as 25 of Chile's 26 casinos operated without interruption throughout August, for the first time since the beginning of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March 2020.

The only casino that remained shut was the Municipal Casino of Natales.

A total of CLP$6.08bn of the contribution came from the casinos, which operate under Chile's Law No. 19,995 of Casinos. VAT from gambling generated CLP$5.73bn, while CLP$1.38bn came from income tax.

The regional governments and municipalities of the casinos will the receive the necessary gambling tax payments in October.

The Sun Monticello casino made the largest contributions, paying CLP$797.8m in tax to its regional government and the same in municipal tax.

Enjoy ViƱa del Mar made a CLP$324.2m contribution to its regional government, with the same in municipal tax.

Meanwhile, Marina del Sol Talcahuano came in third with CLP$302.1m payments to both its regional government and municipal tax.
